Onion Tarte Tatin

Onion Tarte Tatin is a deliciously savory take on the classic French dessert, featuring tender caramelized onions that melt into a rich, sweet-and-salty filling. The onions are slowly cooked in butter until golden and perfectly sweetened, then topped with a buttery, flaky pastry that bakes to a golden crisp. Once flipped, the result is a stunning upside-down tart with layers of soft, aromatic onions enveloped in a crisp, golden crust. It’s the perfect balance of sweetness and savory goodness, making it a unique and impressive dish for any occasion. Visit groovyfoodiess.com for more of Sarah's recipes!

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Heat a small oven-proof pan over medium-low heat. Add the butter, and let melt.
  3. Add the halved onion to the pan. Cook until slightly golden on both sides, about 3 minutes per side.
  4. Pour the honey, balsamic vinegar glaze, salt, and black pepper over the onion and inside the pan.
  5. Remove the pan from heat. Top with the puff pastry sheet, making sure to trim extra edges and press the sides together to make a slight pleat. Seal with a fork.
  6. Whisk together the egg and water in a small bowl. Brush the mixture over the top of the puff pastry.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven. Careful invert the tatin onto a plate. Top with sesame seeds, scallions, red pepper flakes, and whatever else your heart desires!
  9. Enjoy!
