- 1 lb filet mignon, or ribeye steak
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
- 1 tablespoon steak seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 yellow onion, one half chopped into large pieces (remaining half reserved for another use)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- cooked rice, for serving

Preparation
- Cut your steak into 1- to 2-inch cubes.
- Season the steak all over with the salt, black pepper, steak seasoning, and garlic powder.
- Heat a cast-iron skillet over a large flame until very hot, about 5 minutes. Add the oil to the skillet. Add the steak, and let sear for 1 minute, undisturbed.
- Stir in the chopped onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion pieces are slightly charred, about 2 minutes.
- Stir in the butter and soy sauce. Stir and remove from heat after all the sides are charred to avoid overcooking the steak. Serve immediately over rice.
