I Ate A Bunch Of "Back To The Future" Food At Universal Studios, Here's What I Thought

Where we're going, we don't need forks.

Hello, friends, I'm Crystal, and I'm a big fan of Back to the Future, as well as trying wild, interesting, and new foods at theme parks. So, when I found out Universal Studios Hollywood currently has an entire menu of Back to the Future-themed food, I thought...this is heavy!

Now, some of the BTTF food was actually introduced during Universal's Fan Fest Nights. But the good news for anyone who couldn't make it to that limited event is that it's still available (with some NEW additions) as part of Universal's Mega Movie Summer!

Mega Movie Summer is basically Universal's celebration of some of their biggest properties, like Back to the Future, as well as Jurassic World, How to Train Your Dragon, Wicked, and also Jaws, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary! The celebration is going on now and continues daily through Sunday, Aug. 10, and is all included in the regular price of admission. (It is NOT a separate ticket/event!)

Here's a look at the entire Back to the Future menu, which is available at Mel's Diner in the park:

Note: Some of the items on the menu are the "normal" Mel's Diner fare, so if you're looking for a regular ol' chili dog, they've got that, too!

Here's what I thought...

Flux Capacitor Patty Melt

Things started off really strong with the patty melt. I've never met a patty melt I didn't like, and this one is no exception. Do not be fooled by my unimpressive photo above! All the grilled aspects — the buttery bread, the onions, and the patty itself — were perfectly cooked. And I have to give them props for "branding" the top of the bun with a little Flux Capacitor logo, even if it was a LITTLE tough to make out, LOL. I appreciate fun decorative details! 9.5/10

Doc Brown's Chicken Pot Pie

I'm actually really torn between this and the patty melt being my favorite dish. First of all, I love that it's kind of a joke/nod to the "Doc Brown's Chicken" restaurant that used to exist at Universal Studios. (Why would Doc Brown have a chicken restaurant?! The world may never know.) Next, the cheesy crumbles on top of the pot pie were a deliciously savory surprise, plus I loved that it was in the form of a radioactive/plutonium logo (more fun details!). Finally, the chicken pot pie itself was perfect. It had a nice, flaky, buttery top, succulent chicken, and savory fillings. What's not to like?! If I have one tiny complaint, it's that this dish is a little small for the price (considering it's almost the same price as the melts, which come with fries on the side). So, this probably isn't the best bang for your buck. BUT, if you love a good pot pie, this one is worth it. 9/10

Time Machine Pastrami Melt

Unsurprisingly, the pastrami melt was also super yummy. It had all the right elements — juicy pastrami meat, crunchy slaw, tangy Swiss cheese, and perfectly grilled bread. But if I had to pick between the melts, I'd go with the patty one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Much like the other details, the cute "88 mph" toothpick it came with was a fun touch! 8/10

Flux Capacitor (Drink)

This entertaining drink (which is non-alcoholic) comes with Sprite, passionfruit, and blue Curaçao syrup, and is very refreshing! But the REAL winner is the fact that it's served with dry ice, which makes it look like something Doc Brown would concoct in his lab. 7/10

Note: There's also a "Wake Up Juice" cocktail on the menu, but because I'm not currently drinking alcohol, I didn't try it. But it looks great also (and, of course, LOVE the name)!

Time Traveler's Milk Shake

This milkshake was...A LOT. Like, it's super sweet. Despite the cute blue coloring, I was surprised the flavor was simply vanilla, but specifically like vanilla cupcake frosting flavor. So, if that's your jam, you will LOVE this. But, if you're not really into sweets, I'd prob give this a skip! 6/10

Finally, the Outatime Cookie

As far as cookies go, this isn't the GREATEST cookie I've ever had. It's basically a hard sugar cookie, and the frosting doesn't have a particular flavor...so taste-wise, not exactly noteworthy. BUT, let's be real, if you're getting this cookie, it's because it looks cool AF. And I reallllly love the design. 8/10

As I mentioned, this special Back to the Future menu is available at Universal Studios Hollywood as part of their Mega Movie Summer! And, FYI, if BTTF isn't your ~thing~, there's also fun food themed around Jaws, Jurassic World, and How to Train Your Dragon available throughout the park.

Oh, and be SURE to get a pic with the iconic GIANT SHARK from Jaws that's been reintroduced to the theme park for Mega Movie Summer! (Maybe you remember it from your childhood?!). Obsessed. And if you're lucky, you might get a chance to meet Captain Quint and Chief Brody, who are making their theme park debut!
